The 90-Second Pre-Wash: Milbon's Most Overlooked Instruction

The 90-Second Pre-Wash: Milbon's Most Overlooked Instruction

Open any Milbon shampoo and you will find the same line, printed the same way, on product after product:

"Expert Tip: Thoroughly wet both hair and scalp for 90 seconds before shampooing to maximize product performance."

It is not marketing copy. It is the single most-repeated instruction in the entire Milbon catalog — we counted: 16 different shampoos carry it, across Moisture, Reawaken, Repair, Volume, Smooth, Scalp and four other lines.

Which raises the obvious question. Why 90 seconds, and what happens if you skip it?

Why the pre-wash exists

Most people wash their hair the way they wash their hands: wet for a few seconds, apply product, rinse. For shampoo that is backwards.

Ninety seconds of water does three things that a five-second splash cannot:

It saturates the fiber. Dry hair is water-repellent — that is the cuticle doing its job. Until the hair is genuinely soaked, shampoo sits on the surface instead of dispersing, and you end up using more of it to get the same lather.

It lifts the dirt first. Water alone carries away a large share of surface oil and product buildup. Whatever the shampoo has to remove afterward is a much smaller job.

It reduces friction. This is the one that matters most. Shampooing dry hair means dragging a slick product across a dry cuticle. Doing it on saturated hair means the strands are already lubricated, so the shampoo glides instead of scraping.

That last point is why the instruction says hair and scalp, not just hair. The scalp needs the water as much as the lengths do.

How to actually do it

Set a timer. Ninety seconds is far longer than it feels — most people guess at fifteen.

  1. Step in and wet the scalp first, then the lengths, until water runs clear through the ends.
  2. Keep the water moving for the full 90 seconds. Do not stand still.
  3. Then shampoo as normal: emulsify between your palms first, then work into hair and scalp.

If you have thick or long hair, add time. If your hair is fine and short, 90 seconds is usually enough.

What to expect

Nothing dramatic on day one. What you notice over a couple of weeks is that you need less shampoo, the lather comes faster, and your hair feels less tangled before you condition. The pre-wash is the cheapest upgrade in any routine — it costs nothing and it is already printed on the bottle.

One thing it does not fix: if your water runs hot, you are undoing some of the benefit. More on that below.
